Word just got out that Rolex has appointed Jean-Frédéric Dufour, current CEO of Zenith, as their new CEO. This news has also been confirmed by Rolex (press release at end of this article). As such he will replace Gian Riccardo Marini, who has been CEO for a little less than 3 years, since May 3th 2011. Introducing the Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi ref. 116719BLRO

When Rolex unveils a new watch, they do it when they plan to do it. As we told you before, when we were guessing what the new Rolex novelties for 2014 would be, is that Rolex' secrets seem more secure than the famous Swiss banks. Our guessing was actually pretty accurate and one of the models we hoped to see, was the new GMT-Master II with red/blue bezel, the desirable 'Pepsi'. The new 'Pepsi' caused quite some mixed emotions at the Monochrome headquarters.

Watching Celeb Watches – Eric Clapton

In our Watching Celeb Watches column, we’ve been looking the big side with Michael Jordan, we’ve seen some action with Jason Statham and we’ve covered three of our favourite TV-Show presenters, being the Top-Gear guys. Today, we’re looking at a musician; someone who’s is to the music what Leonardo Da Vinci was to the art. It may be exaggerated but Eric Clapton is a legend, and rightfully so. And lucky for us, his taste for watches is also highly interesting.

Hands-on with the Rolex Yacht-Master 116655 (Everose gold on Rubber Strap) – Live Photos & Price

Rolex may have a new CEO, it's not meaning that things are going to radically change for the old house. The 'Crown' used us to just update and improve the collections instead of purely changing them. For Baselworld 2015, you won't be surprised to see that the recipe had been kept. However, one of the classics is receiving an important update. Here is the new edition of the Rolex Yacht-Master now in Everose gold, with a ceramic bezel and with a rubber strap.

Introducing the Rolex Day-Date 40 with the new Calibre 3255 – Review with Live photos, specs & price

The Rolex Day-Date had always been the most elegant, refined and luxurious watch of the Oyster Collection by Rolex - that also has elegant watches in its Cellini collection. Exclusively made in precious metals - gold or platinum - it was available for years in 36mm and more recently in 41mm (with the Day-Date II), but still with the same complication: a 3-hand timepiece showing the date and the day in a unique (but now iconic and highly copied) way. For Baselworld 2015, this luxury Rolex receives a serious update, not only by getting new colours but also by coming with a new case and, mostly, a brand new movement. Here is the Rolex Day-Date 40 with the new Rolex Calibre 3255.

Hands-on Review – The 2015 Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm Ref. 114300 – specs & price

If you look at the Rolex collections, there are the sports watches - defined by the Oyster name and including icons like the Submariner or the Sea-Dweller or proper tools like the DeepSea  - and the very dressed, classical watches - named Cellini, that had been renewed last year. However, there is another sub-collection that can be found in the Oyster range of watches, what we could call the casual, daily watches - those timepieces that you could easily wear on a daily basis. This sub-collection mixes the sporty attributes with a non-posh elegance, like for instance the Sky-Dweller or the Day-Date 40. Those are however pricy, luxurious watches. If you're not having pockets made for gold or platinum, there is a casual watch for you: the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. Here is the 2015 collection.

Cool Finds: an ultra-rare prototype of Rolex Single-Red Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 dialed 500M/1650FT

When it comes to collect rare watches - and especially Rolex watches - there are the classical ones, the rare ones and the others, the ones that you can find only once in a lifetime. This goes for an Albino Rolex Daytona (a.k.a the famous Clapton's watch), a tropical coffee Paul Newman or a lemon dial Daytona Prototype. Those are the kind of watches that hardcore collectors are dreaming of - and even with the related bank account, there's potentially no chance to get hands on them. Today, we found one of these ultra-rare birds, a one-of-six known, the Uber-rare prototype Rolex Single Red Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 dialed 500M/1650FT. And it's for sale!

Cool Finds: ultra-rare early Rolex Submariner ref. 6536 and Ref. 6538 watches for sale

We mentionned it this morning, when reviewing one of the rarest Rolexes, the Single-Red Sea-Dweller 1665 Prototype: there are rare and collectible vintage timepieces and there are the once-in-a-lifetime ones. For sure, this SD is such a piece but we also found some pretty interesting early Rolex Submariners (yes, that an understatement) that you won't able to see everyday. Here are three of the most sought-after Subs, a 1955 Ref. 6536 with red depth rating, a 1955 Ref. 6536 with ultra-tropical 'Explorer' dial and finally a 1956 Ref. 6538 'Big Crown' with red depth rating.

Tempus Machina Ref. 216A – A customized Rolex Submariner reminiscent of the Ref. 6538 (live pics & price)

It's not often that we talk about customized watches here, at Monochrome-Watches. Brands usually don't like this practice that consists in changing several visual or technical aspects of a watch. We don't cover them also because of the look of such customizations - usually fully black or fully paved with diamonds. Such customization processes can even result is this horror. However, sometimes, aftermarket modifications can lead to proper beauties like the Heritage Submariner by Project X Designs or this new Tempus Machina Ref. 216A, a customized Rolex Submariner reminiscent of the Ref. 6538.
